I am currently heavily working on making SNMP4J ready for AI. In the first step that means providing an MCP server for SNMP4J (/SNMP4J-SMI).
The interesting part of this is, how agentic coding AND problem analysis can be supported best. This isn’t trivial of course and a fast moving target as well. Nevertheless I expect to have an early access release 0.9 available until June 2026.
The next step is then to improve stability, security, usability, and feature completeness on all major SNMP4J-* packages - where possible and suitable.
While this requires a significant invest, turnaround of the SNMP tools like AgenPro, MIB Designer, and MIB Explorer are dropping. I see potential in integrating AI with all of these tools too, but this needs more investigation on how this could help end-users best. I appreciate any ideas and comments!
This transition process of open source software which becomes even more important for sovereign, secure, but flexible solutions! Unfortunately, the opportunities for refinancing software development with selling enhancements to open source APIs and tools drop - especially if AI tokens remain that cheap as of today!
