I would like to understand how SNMPEngineBoots is handled by SNMP4J.
Is it persisted in some file somewhere (which one?) by default and incremented at each process re-start? Or is it entirely the responsibility of the application re-using SNMP4J to persist it?
Then I understand from the API that it is possible to retrieve and set it in some way.

You can find what you are looking for in the org.snmp4j.cfg package:
SnmpEngineIdProvider→EngineBootsCounterFile
